About this Library

Brainerd Branch opened on February 20, 1999, replacing a much smaller storefront, which had previously been at 8945 South Loomis Street.  The branch features clerestory cathedral ceilings and clerestory windows.

A wall-relief sculpture by Preston Jackson entitled “Forever Gwendolyn,” celebrates three phases of the life of Gwendolyn Brooks, Poet Laureate of Illinois, and the first African American woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.  The artwork was funded through the Percent for Art Ordinance administered by the City of Chicago Public Art Program.
