The commitments /
Doyle, Roddy, 1958-

Captivated with American R and B, Jimmy Rabbitte sets out to form a band to introduce soul music to the city of Dublin. He pulls together an unlikely collection of musicians and calls them The Commitments, but even as the music starts to gel, the band starts to crumble. Funny and fast-paced, this story of the rise and fall of a local band will have readers singing Doyle's praises.

The ground beneath her feet : a novel /
Rushdie, Salman.

A creative retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice set in the rock and roll world. Rai Merchant narrates the story of lovers Vina Apsara and Ormus Cama, the lead singer and founder, respectively, of the most famous band in the world. The story begins in 1989 with Vina's death in an earthquake, but then goes back to tell of how the three friends grew up together in Bombay and the path that led Vina and Ormus to fame and fortune. Parallel worlds, magical realism and the sweeping tapestry of history inhabit illuminate this complex novel.

Hornby, Nick.

Rob Fleming is an aimless 30-something music addict who runs a London record store. He is aimlessly drifting, his biggest challenge being trading "top five� lists with his fellow music aficionado employees, when his long-time girlfriend walks out on him. He looks back on the history of his "top five� romantic entanglements in hopes of finding some redemption and resolution.

The last of the savages : a novel /
McInerney, Jay.

Patrick Keane recounts his life; a life in which Will Savage, a friend from boarding school, plays a big part. As Patrick works his way in the academic and profession world, Will chooses a more bohemian existence as a huge record producer with an appreciation for the Blues.

Never mind the Pollacks : a rock n' roll novel /
Pollack, Neal, 1970-

This is a recollection of the life of fictional rock critic, Neal Pollock, told through a series of interviews conducted by a rival critic after his death. A series of famous musicians make appearances in this tongue-in-cheek novel covering a large slice rock n' roll history.

Never mind nirvana : a novel /
Lindquist, Mark, 1959-

Peter Tyler has turned in his flannel for a suit and his bass guitar for a briefcase. Formerly, a musician in a grunge band, Peter has grown-up and got a respectable job, but still has the same friends and the same vices.

Reservation blues /
Alexie, Sherman, 1966-

After an encounter with legendary Blues guitarist Robert Johnson, Thomas Builds-the-Fire decides to form an all-Indian Catholic R and B group with fellow musicians from his community on the Spokane Reservation.

The rich man's table /
Spencer, Scott.

Billy, a schoolteacher, is bothered that his father, Luke Fairchild (inspired by Bob Dylan) doesn't acknowledge him and he is terribly frustrated. Meanwhile his mother, who met Luke in Greenwich Village in the 1960s, seems to drinking herself to death slowly. This is a cleverly satirical and compelling story of the strains of being a star.

Tender : a novel /
Childress, Mark.

Mired in poverty, Leroy Kirby's childhood in rural Mississippi is less than ideal. However, a passion for music and the love of his overbearing mother provide Leroy with hope and determination. When he is signed by a local recording company after an outstanding talent show performance his music career begins to skyrocket.

The wishbones /
Perrotta, Tom, 1961-

Dave Raymond is a 30-something musician playing in a wedding band, The Wishbones, with dwindling dreams of fame. Witnessing the death of an older musician causes him to panic and he impulsively asks his longtime girlfriend to marry him. However, it doesn't take long for regrets to set in.

You don't love me yet /
Lethem, Jonathan.

Living in Los Angeles, Lucinda Hoekke answers phones at a complaint lines which is actually the conceptual art project of a friend. One caller, a middle aged man she calls "the complainer", intruiges her and his complaints are eventually made into songs by the songwriter of a band that she plays bass guitar in. As the band starts to achieve success, "the complainer" starts to realize that something is owed to him.
